The Brief

Utilising a fixed rooflight, this modernised rear extension has been resurrected, emphasising uninterrupted views of the garden from both the kitchen and snug. Helping to bring in an abundance of natural daylight and creating a feature element for this family home.

After initial discussion with the client, KJC Architects design included a large format rooflight and large fixed window below, which would help to replace the existing glazed extension with a more modernised extension within the same footprint.

The new roof was going to be finished with a standing seam steel roof, therefore they wanted to compliment this with an equally modern roof light to allow a shard of light into the core of the house, in particular, the kitchen space.

Having worked with Glazing Vision before and using some of their standard products, Kevin Clarke Director of KJC Architects, initially sourced out their Flushglaze rooflight as he felt the frameless design and modern look would work well on a project of this magnitude.

The Solution

However, after sitting down for a more detailed discussion with Glazing Vision’s Technical Specification Manager Barry Marchant, Kevin Clarke was advised of a solution which would allow him to combine both elements as one feature.

Recommended was the eaves rooflight, which could help to avoid the unnecessary gap between the window and rooflight and bringing in as much light as possible whilst also creating a view of the garden.

The Glazing Vision ‘eaves’ Flushglaze rooflight comprises of two or more glazed sections installed in both vertical and horizontal planes, joined together with a structural silicone seal. Internally, the eaves Flushglaze unit provides the same frameless views, resulting in a seamless transition between inside and outside.

The Details

The fixed eaves rooflight, measuring 3010mm (span) x 1310mm (width) x 1556mm (height), provided a continuous view of the garden and allowed KJC Architects to focus on one tree in the garden, which they wanted to emphasise from the initial concept stage.

“The eaves rooflight, provided additional natural light, gave expansive views of the garden and became a feature in its own right” explains Kevin Clarke. “we were very happy with the end result; it is as striking and impressive as we hoped it would be.”
