Overview

For the launch of Miiro’s debut London hotel, Templeton Garden in Earl’s Court, architects Holland Harvey refurbished an existing 156-bedroom hotel and designed a brand-new, orangery-inspired contemporary extension. Glazing Vision Flushglaze Eaves Rooflights were specified to anchor this new architectural addition, channeling daylight deep into the ground-floor social spaces and out toward the landscaped gardens.

Project Overview: A Heritage-Led Hotel Retrofit

Occupying a terrace of seven Victorian townhouses in West London’s Nevern Conservation Area, Miiro Templeton Garden is a 156-bedroom hotel that marks a key milestone in Miiro’s new European brand family. Originally converted into a hotel in the 1970s, the property has undergone a comprehensive, heritage-led refurbishment masterminded by architects Holland Harvey.

To enhance the hotel’s amenity offering, Holland Harvey secured planning consent for a new contemporary rear extension alongside the strategic reworking of existing lightwells. Designed to emulate traditional Victorian orangeries, the new addition draws on the rhythm, proportions, and architectural language of the existing terrace while standing out as a distinctly contemporary intervention.

A cozy lounge area featuring comfortable seating, a small round table, and bookshelves filled with books. Soft lighting illuminates the space, with indoor plants adding a touch of greenery.

The Challenge: Daylighting Deep-Plan Heritage Spaces

Designing within the strict planning constraints of the Royal Borough of Kensington & Chelsea presents unique challenges. The architects sought to extend the basement and ground-floor levels to house enhanced guest amenities, dining areas, and back-of-house facilities, all while establishing an uninterrupted visual connection with the expansive private gardens.

Because the extension and lower-level spaces sat deep within the terrace footprint, maximising daylight distribution without compromising the historic rhythm, characterised by London stock brickwork, white timber, and classic sash proportions, was critical. The scheme called for a high-performance daylighting solution that echoed the lightness of a traditional conservatory while meeting modern thermal transmittance, structural integrity, and acoustic standards.

The Solution: Integration of Eaves Rooflights

To achieve this vision, our Flushglaze Eaves Rooflights were specified and integrated into the design of the contemporary extension and lightwell transitions.

The rooflights played a transformative role in the project, capturing sunlight at the roofline edge, flooding the expanded ground floor with unobstructed, panoramic daylight.

Capturing light from both above and the side allowed illumination to penetrate far deeper into the ground-floor social spaces than standard flat rooflights would permit.

Drawing light from both the vertical and horizontal planes, the rooflights enhanced the visual link between the interior social spaces and the surrounding greenery, by replacing the solid junction between the wall and roof with structural glass, the unit draws natural daylight deep into the building’s core and establishes a continuous connection to the landscape beyond.
