Ridgeglaze Brings Natural Light to Restored Heritage Outbuilding
Overview
A landmark of the Peak District's railway heritage has been given a new lease of life at Millers Dale Station, with a Ridgeglaze Rooflight forming an important part of the transformation.
Once a working goods shed serving the Midland Railway, the historic building had fallen into disrepair. A major £320,000 restoration project (funded through the European Agricultural Fund for Rural Development) transformed the former railway building into an engaging visitor, celebrating the industrial heritage, wildlife and landscape of Millers Dale.
A completely new roof designed to retain the building's distinctive cathedral-like character, with a Ridgeglaze Rooflight at the heart of it to introduce natural daylight into the interior.

A New Chapter for Millers Dale
After its extensive restoration, the Goods Shed provides visitors with an interactive journey through Millers Dale's past and present. Interpretation tells the story of the railway, the people who used the station during its working years, the area's wildlife and the transformation of the former railway line into the popular Monsal Trail.
The restored building serves a very different purpose from its original railway role, but its historic character remains central to the experience.
The Ridgeglaze Rooflight contributes to that transformation in a simple but significant way: bringing daylight into a historic structure while supporting its new life as a welcoming public space.
Bringing Natural Light into the Goods Shed
The scale and character of the Goods Shed's interior called for a rooflight solution that could provide generous levels of daylight without compromising the appearance of the restored roof.
The Bespoke 8-section Ridgeglaze Rooflight provides a contemporary glazing solution at the ridge, introducing daylight deep into the building and enhancing the visitor experience.
Rather than relying solely on artificial lighting, the rooflight allows changing natural light to become part of the interior environment. This is particularly effective within the large, open space, where the restored roof structure remains visible to visitors.
Heritage Meets Modern Performance
The restoration demonstrates how carefully selected modern building products can work alongside traditional materials and heritage architecture.
The new roof incorporates contemporary construction techniques while retaining the distinctive form of the original Goods Shed. Solar panels were also installed as part of the project's wider sustainable approach to energy use at the Millers Dale site.
