Reform Architecture + Design have transformed an unfinished attic into a new primary suite within a three-story, 1908 house in Petworth, Washington DC. In addition to the interior renovation and completion of the attic, the client requested a rooftop deck designed for intimate gatherings and entertaining, with expansive views of the surrounding city.

The Interior Renovation

The design of the attic leverages the openness of the existing volume. Enclosed programmatic elements, including closets and storage, were pushed to the perimeter, allowing the centre of the space to remain visually continuous.

Subtle architectural features define distinct zones in the primary suite, including a three-sided fireplace, shifts in ceiling material, and carefully integrated lighting. This strategy also accentuates the home’s original materials, notably exposed brick and wood framing. A continuous wood surround flows the occupant’s movement through the space, towards the second floor and up to the new roof deck.

Roof Deck Access

One of the client’s primary goals was a roof deck with clear views of the surrounding city. However, zoning and building codes prohibited a traditional stair penthouse or pop-up due to height restrictions and proximity to neighboring structures.
These limitations prompted the exploration of alternative roof access solutions. A roof hatch became the most viable option, but one that still needed to feel architectural and aesthetic, this is why the Glazing Vision SkyDoor was specified.

The Glazing Vision SkyDoor

The Skydoor provided a solution that balanced regulatory constraints, functional requirements, and the design ambition. The unit allows abundant natural light to flow deep into the primary suite below whilst allowing seamless access to the new roof deck.

Reform Architecture + Design are pleased with the outcome that the SkyDoor provided, commenting; “The Skydoor established a powerful connection between the stair, the sky, and the act of ascending—transforming the moment of moving through the roof and onto the roof deck with views of the sky and surrounding city”

The Outcome

The project successfully transforms an underutilized attic into a light-filled primary suite while creating a useful rooftop deck whilst adhering to strict urban constraints. Through careful spatial sequencing, material continuity, and the integration of the Skydoor, the design enhances daily living and connects occupants to the wonderful cityscape.
